Early detection is the best protection. This month, we are highlighting the importance of breast self-exams. Our goal is to raise $120,000 for breast cancer prevention, research, and treatment.

Our Friend Kirby.
Kirby Emerson’s vibrant, resilient energy is infectious, and she has an incredible story to tell.
A lifelong Vancouverite, athlete and swimmer, Kirby had stage IV soft tissue cancer as a teenager — a formative experience that recently came full circle when she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer last year. During her treatment, Kirby decided to go back to school to become a nurse, a choice inspired by the massive impact nurses have had on her own health journey.
We sat down with Kirby to learn about the importance of self-advocacy, why “it’s always worth it to swim out to the buoy”, and how a supportive community is everything.

MEET
Our Friend Ash.
Ashleigh Ball is one of those people who feels like summer. Her creative genius and playful, pixie-like spirit makes everything (and everyone!) feel like magic in her orbit.
In August 2025, Ash was diagnosed with stage IV, triple-negative breast cancer. Since that life-altering moment, Ash has navigated her health journey with grace and tenacity, her beloved family and friends by her side.
We recently sat down with Ash to learn about her love of cold dips, saunas, and sound baths; how she alchemized her passion for music into a potent form of healing; and why improving early detection protocols — especially for people with dense breasts — is so close to her heart.

OUR FOREVER LOF TEAMMATE:
Natalie Matko Jackson
The original motivation for Check Yourself was our forever LOF teammate, Natalie. Natalie was an incredible spirit. She was an athlete, wildly smart, and an adventurous soul, with a laugh that sounded like a hug. She was the best.
During her breast cancer journey, Natalie baked cakes (we told you she was an overachiever!) and donated 100% of proceeds to BC Cancer’s breast cancer research program. It is in Nat’s memory that Check Yourself has become an annual event, now in its fifth consecutive year.
